Anesthesia Options

MAC and conscious sedation both use medications given through an IV, with local anesthetic applied to the procedure area for additional comfort. With both options, the medications work quickly and wear off fast, so most patients begin recovering within minutes after they are stopped.

  • Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC) provides a deeper, sleep-like level of sedation where you are unaware of the procedure while still maintaining your own natural breathing.

  • Conscious sedation is lighter. You remain awake but relaxed, may feel drowsy or have limited memory of the procedure, and are still able to respond and communicate with your provider.

Dr. Zamora and Dr. Kober work with Angie Goddard, CRNA, and Ellen Neufeld, CRNA, for cases where patients opt for anesthesia, and you will be monitored closely throughout your procedure to support your safety and comfort.

Patient Instructions

RIDE HOME:
You must have a responsible adult you personally know drive you home after your procedure. Uber, taxis, and other hired transportation are not permitted. That adult must be available for the next 24 hours in case of an unexpected reaction to the sedative.

MEDICATIONS:
Please take all medications prescribed by your doctor unless you have been instructed otherwise. (Note: Do not stop blood pressure medications.)

GLP-1 MEDICATIONS:
If you take an injectable GLP-1 medication, you must stop it for one full week before sedation. You must also not eat for 12 hours before your arrival because these medications slow digestion. Please contact our office if you have any questions or need clarification.

BEFORE SEDATION:

  • 12 hours before arrival: If you take an injectable GLP-1, do not eat anything.

  • 6 hours before arrival: Do not eat or drink anything except plain water or black coffee (no cream, sugar, or sweeteners), which are allowed until 2 hours before arrival.

  • 2 hours before arrival: Do not consume anything by mouth, including water, black coffee, gum, mints, or candy.

AFTER SEDATION:
Do not drive, participate in dangerous activities, or make important decisions until the following day.

Failure to follow these instructions may result in cancellation of your procedure.
