The Skincare Trends You Need To Follow In 2022

Our clinicians pow-wowed and reviewed the latest trends, the gold standards, and what skincare you should focus on this year.

In an industry that is always changing, we wanted to set the record straight on the skincare treatments and products that you should add to your regimen!

Digital Aging

Blue light is everywhere

Since the pandemic our exposure to blue light has increased and is almost unavoidable with schooling and working from home, Facetime and Zoom calls, and not to mention binging Netflix and TikTok! But what is blue light and how dangerous is it? Blue light - also known as High Energy Visible (HEV) Light- is the wavelength of light that is emitted from our favorite devices (phones, tablets, computers). It is also emitted by the sun.

Blue Light Skin Care

You have probably already heard about the need for blue light lenses which protect your eyes by filtering blue light from digital screens. Lenses with blue light protection prevent digital eyestrain, tiredness and headaches that can come from working in front of a screen all day. We all know we shouldn’t look at our phones before bed and it’s because of blue light, too much of it can throw off our circadian rhythm, our natural sleep-wake cycle and can cause a decrease in melatonin making it difficult to fall asleep. But what is blue light doing to your skin?

Studies have shown that blue light can deteriorate antioxidants in the skin and increase free radicals and inflammation which can lead to accelerated signs of aging, worsening the wrinkles, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation.

How do we protect ourselves and continue to live in a digital age? SkinMedica’s Lumivive System offers 24/7 protection with a day and night serum to protect and defend skin throughout the day, and repair and recharge skin at night.
🌞 DAY SERUM: Loaded with powerful antioxidants like cacao seed extract and alteromonas ferment extract (from deep sea algae) to defend skin from damaging environmental aggressors like blue light and pollution.
🌜 NIGHT SERUM: Repairs the skin with potent ingredients and like mitoquinol mesylate, an antioxidant that creates mitochondrial protection to strengthen cells. Pentapeptide-34 Trifluoroacetate is another powerhouse peptide that helps naturally support coenzyme Q10 to recharge skin while reducing the appearance of environmental damage.
Jamie, PMA and Cosmetic Injector swears by Lumivive, “It’s really the best product for blue light protection. The day and night serum have made such a difference in my skin - it’s so glowy!” And if you don’t have Lumivive yet, the next best thing for blue light protection is an SPF. Be sure you’ve got one that’s loaded with antioxidants and protects against UVA, UVB, and HEV rays. “We sell SkinMedica Total Defense and Repair SPF which has the powerful SOL-IR Advanced Antioxidant Complex with micronized zinc oxide - so you don’t get that white tint! Because of the antioxidant complex and the SPF coverage, Total Defense SPF is a rockstar multitasking product - I love those!” says Jamie.

The HydraFacial Signature treatment has been our maskne hero treatment! This 30-minute service is painless, has no downtime and is perfect for all skin types. It offers a super deep clean, gentle exfoliation and then intense hydration. It’s been a game-changer with treating maskne because we can target specific areas of the face that may have more congestion. Each step of the treatment is very gentle which is crucial with irritated or congested skin.

The treatment uses the proprietary Vortex Technology to gently dislodge and remove impurities while simultaneously delivering hydrating, soothing serums. The process starts with a gentle deep clean and relaxing resurfacing that washes away dead skin cells and preps the skin for the other treatment steps. The second step infuses skin with a gentle peel solution that has a low percentage glycolic acid and salicylic acid to loosen impurities and debris from pores. The gentle vacuum suction removes debris from skin without irritation or damage to the skin (no painful extractions here!) And don’t worry, there’s no post treatment peeling. The final step bathes the skin in a nourishing serum with antioxidants and peptides. Custom Booster Serums can be added instead to target deeper congestion, pigmentation or fine lines. Skin is hydrated, protected and glowing!

If you aren’t able to make it in for HydraFacials, we recommend grabbing the Complexion Renewal Pads by ZO Skin Health. These have already gained a cult following among regular mask users as an effective treatment for keeping breakouts at bay. These pads can be used morning and/or night to help minimize surface oil and exfoliate pore-clogging dead skin cells and bacteria. Sarah, PMA and Cosmetic Injector raves about this product and recommends them to all her patients - it’s also a staple in her daily skincare routine. “The Complexion Renewal pads prevent breakouts, replenish skin hydration and provide antioxidant and anti irritant benefits which our skin needs daily, and even more so when we are dealing with maskne. This product has literally saved my skin! I wear a mask and face-shield all day so I need that extra level of exfoliation especially on my forehead and around the mouth and nose area.” The combination of key ingredients include glycolic acid to exfoliate, salicylic acid to prevent breakouts, urea to soften and smooth the skin, and a botanical blend to reduce redness and soothe. The easy delivery system (textured, presoaked pads!) are designed to help exfoliate skin. And, pro-tip: you can cut pads in half to extend the life of your product!

The Chin Is In

CHIN definition is HAVING A MOMENT

It’s no secret that a defined profile is all the rage right now… selfies have made that very obvious! Since 2020, the demand for facial sculpting with dermal fillers has grown - and there is no sign of this craze slowing. What’s exciting about this aesthetic trend is its accessibility. Facial sculpting with injectable fillers allows patients to see instant improvements without the pain, cost, or recovery of cosmetic surgery. Dermal filler treatments are quick, the results are immediate, and there’s no downtime. 💉

Big news! The recent FDA approval for chin refinement and augmentation shows the demand for facial contouring treatments.

Using dermal fillers for chin refinement lets our injectors sculpt and build the chin to give you your desired look - a more feminine or heart shaped face, or a more angular and stronger looking chin. Adding volume to an under projected or recessed chin can improve the profile and add facial symmetry to anchor the face. Chin refinement with dermal fillers can balance other facial features as well, like minimizing the appearance of a larger nose.

As we age, we lose fat around the mouth and chin which can cause wrinkles around the lips and corners of the mouth, marionette lines, and jowls. Our bones become thinner as we age and we experience bone loss which gives our mandible (lower jawbone) a gradual sunken, collapsed look. Adding injectable dermal fillers along the chin and around the mouth can add volume back to the lower face. Lifting the cheeks with dermal fillers can compliment and blend the chin and jawline to give an overall more youthful look to the face.

Chezney, RN and Cosmetic Injector tells all her patients, “Fillers aren’t just for lips anymore. Chin augmentation really makes an impressive yet subtle difference in the look and shape of your face.” Facial contouring is all about the proportion and your injector’s aesthetic eye, so it’s crucial to have a consultation to discuss your chin goals. Once you’ve decided on the look you want to achieve, our injectors determine which products to use and we get to it!

The dermal filler product is injected using either a cannula or needle depending on the area, and we use a topical numbing cream and ice to minimize discomfort. Plan on spending about an hour with us for your treatment, the actual injections take about 30-minutes and the results are instant! You can get back to your regular routine after your appointment and while you may experience some bruising and swelling, it can be covered with makeup. The area will definitely be tender for a few days and but this will dissipate as you heal. Don’t touch or apply pressure during the healing process, you don’t want to displace the filler. We always have patients back for a two week follow up so we can see your healing. Chin up, buttercup - results can last up to one year!

Minimally Invasive

Better results, less downtime

The ‘Zoom Boom’ rocked the cosmetic industry in 2020 with the increased demand for procedures amid the pandemic. From Kybella to Lipo, the convenience of being at home after a cosmetic treatment gave many people the opportunity (and excuse!) to take the plunge and get that treatment they have been wanting. And while staying at home to recover after your procedure has been easier during COVID, there is still the demand for treatments that offer better results with less downtime, and patients are seeking these out! So what is the newest minimally invasive treatment available right now?

The Opus - Fractional Micro Plasma is the latest advanced energy device to give patients impressive skin resurfacing results with little to no downtime.

Like traditional, laser skin resurfacing, Opus Plasma removes a small fraction of the skin, which stimulates the surrounding skin to repair itself.

Wait… is this the same plasma as the J-Plazty procedure? No, the Opus uses high frequency unipolar radiofrequency (RF) energy which, when in close proximity to the skin, reacts with the atmospheric pressure in the air. The Opus converts the nitrogen and oxygen in the air into plasma sparks. This plasma creates microchannels on the surface of the skin, jumpstarting the surrounding healthy skin to promote rapid turnover, collagen stimulation and rebuilding to target deeper lines, skin laxity, as well as skin tone and texture. The Opus precisely controls the energy-to-tissue contact time, minimizing unwanted inflammation that often leads to longer recovery.

Treatments are super convenient, comfortable and quick. We apply a topical numbing cream which makes the treatment more pleasant, patients have reported feeling a little warmth during the treatment, and the actual Opus treatment takes less than 30-minutes. Post treatment skin will be red and tight with mild swelling (like a sunburn) and should resolve in 24-36 hours.

Dr. Zamora and our team have been treating acne scarring, moderate to severe lines and wrinkles on the face and neck, peri-oral wrinkles (around the mouth), peri-ocular elasticity (around the eyes) and even stretch marks.

Jaclyn Zamora, Surgical Assistant has been raving about the Opus treatments since we got the device, “This is so customizable - which we love since all of our InfiniVive Facials are bespoke treatments. The Opus gives us three different levels of rejuvenation by delivering energy to address deep, mid, and superficial concerns.” Jaclyn and Dr. Zamora recommend Opus with the InfiniVive Facial Level 4, and with any Eyelid Rejuvenation treatment. The Opus can also be done as a solo treatment with a series of treatments available for best results. “We are seeing such impressive results with Opus with short recovery times. I feel like this treatment will take over other resurfacing treatments at our practice! …did I mention we love it?”
